"Device Performance Limited" or "Surrounding Buildings Are Too Dense"? What to do

Getting "Device performance limited. Cannot load more buildings." or "Surrounding buildings are too dense" while building? Here is what each limit means, how it differs between Homestead, guild bases and Solo World, and how to fix it.

Ever had the game refuse one more piece in a spot that clearly has room? You probably hit one of three different limits: the density cap, a zone limit or the device performance limit. They work very differently.

TL;DR

  • Density cap: the world is cut into invisible 50 m cubes. Each cube holds up to 5,000 pieces. Every piece counts as 1, whatever its size.
  • Zone limit: each Homestead zone and each guild base also has a total number of pieces it can hold, whatever the cubes.
  • Device performance limit (Homestead only, in both of its locations): every piece also has a performance cost, and there is a total limit. Detailed pieces cost a lot more than simple ones. The limit depends on your Component Display Quantity graphics setting.
  • Hitting the density cap: build in the next cube over. Hitting a zone limit: level up the zone. Hitting the device performance limit: raise the setting, or swap heavy pieces for lighter ones.

At a glance: limits by location

Solo World5,000 per cubeNoneNo

Homestead is a system, not a single place: it works in two locations, Blissful Retreat and the Beyond Mundane island.

Limit 1: the density cap (pieces per 50 m cube)

The game splits the map into a grid of invisible 50 × 50 × 50 m cubes. Height counts too, so a tall tower stacks into several cubes on its way up.

Each cube has its own counter. When a cube is full, you can’t place anything more inside it, but the cube next door is a fresh 5,000.

Side view of the 50 m cube grid: each cube has its own 5,000 counter, including the cubes above 0 / 5,000 0 / 5,000 300 / 5,000 4,980 / 5,000 1,200 / 5,000 900 / 5,000 50 m 50 m Each piece counts in the cube where it stands. A tall tower fills the cube above too.

The game’s own help calls this the Area Capacity Limit: “Each plot (50m range) has a capacity limit of 5000.” If a plot goes over 5,000 by accident, the game temporarily allows up to 5,500 so you can clean it up, then goes back to 5,000.

Every piece counts as 1. A tiny nail and a whole house count the same. So this limit is about how many pieces you use, not how big or detailed they are.

Message you see: “Surrounding buildings are too dense”.

Limit 2: the zone limit (total pieces)

On top of the per-cube cap, some places have a total number of pieces they can hold.

  • Guild base: 10,000 pieces in total for the whole base.
  • Homestead: every zone has its own total, shown in the zone’s panel. Levelling up a zone raises it, and some Homestead research adds a bit more on top.
Homestead zoneTotal pieces (level 1 to 10)
Blissful Retreat200, +200 per level, up to 2,000
Cloudrest Passage (Beyond Mundane)10,000 at every level
Aromas Brewery, Porcelain Kiln, Crane Retreat, Tranquil Haven100, +100 per level, up to 1,000
Welcoming Alley, Dwelling Quarters1,000
Artisan Hub, Specialized Artisan Pavilion10,000
House (Residence, Hidden Mountain house)2,000

The zone limits are also covered in Homestead v1.8: what you need to know.

Limit 3: the device performance limit (Homestead)

In a Homestead each piece also has a performance cost: how detailed its 3D model is. The game adds up the cost of everything placed, and once the total would go over your limit, you get “Device performance limited. Cannot load more buildings.”

This one does care about the piece. A plain stool costs around 100, a big decorated building can cost 100,000 or more. The Catalog v2 shows available PC LOD0 values as Faces, so you can compare model complexity. Hover for an explanation or click the badge to return to this guide.

The limit comes from the Component Display Quantity graphics setting, together with a device tier the game picks from your hardware:

Component Display QuantityLimit on a strong PC
Very Low4.5M
Low9M
Medium (default)22.5M
High45M
Extremely Highno limit
No restrictionsno limit

Weaker hardware and mobile get lower limits: at the lowest tier, Medium is about 1.5M and the maximum is 4.7M.

Two things to know:

  • It’s a display limit, tied to your own settings. Raising the setting lets you place more.
  • Visitors with a lower setting may not see everything you built: the game stops loading pieces for them once they reach their own limit.

Other limits, for reference

  • Some pieces have their own “Max X per base” limit (shown in the catalog).
  • A single blueprint holds at most 1,000 pieces, or 2,000 if you are a Mohist. Guild blueprints can hold up to 10,000.
  • Nothing can go above a world height of 2,500.

Quick reminder: how to get unstuck

  1. “Surrounding buildings are too dense”: that 50 m cube is full. Move the dense part a little, or spread details over the neighbouring cubes (including the one above).
  2. Zone or guild base total reached: level up the Homestead zone, or remove pieces somewhere else in that zone or base.
  3. “Device performance limited. Cannot load more buildings.” (Homestead): open Settings, raise Component Display Quantity, or swap a few very detailed pieces for simpler ones.
